Office hours are primarily weekdays, but responsibilities require additional hours and flexibility that can include evenings and weekends.
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. They are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required of one so classified.
1. Maintain and improve laboratory facilities
- Maintain a professional laboratory environment and keep all facilities clean and “tour ready,” including facilitating weekly lab cleaning, equipment inventory checks, supply checks, and audit of safety systems
- Maintain all equipment in a state of safe, ready-to-use operation
- Execute laboratory improvement projects, including equipment installation, laboratory renovations, and equipment repairs.
- Responsible for calibration, safe operation, and routine maintenance of simple and complex material characterization and welding process instruments, machinery and systems. Responsible for troubleshooting faulty equipment, completing repairs, or initiating repair processes as appropriate.

2. Prepare equipment and materials for laboratory classes
- Maintain appointed laboratory hours for supervised student work
- Order, procure, and prepare all materials and supplies required for teaching and research, including preparing materials and equipment for all laboratory-based classes
- Maintain and update working knowledge of all teaching and research equipment, including welding process equipment, specialized research equipment, sample preparation equipment, and microscopy tools
- Develop training modules for all welding and characterization equipment; facilitate training and sign-off of students and researchers for use of equipment
3. Implement safety program
- Implement and enforce laboratory safety program, including facilitating weekly safety meetings, performing housekeeping inspections, and implementing laboratory continuous improvement program
- Properly dispose of waste per environmental health and safety (EH&S) policies
- Maintain proper inventory of materials, including required safety datasheets
4. Support research activities
- Independently develop and implement experimental plans, execute laboratory experiments, and collect data
- Build new experimental set-ups and operate laboratory experiments
- Record and report results and observations, maintaining accurate and comprehensive records of all experiments through laboratory notebook entries
- Communicates results through verbal and written reports to R&D team members.
- Passionate about welding and materials engineering, including welding process development and investigation of materials weldability
- Willing and able to work in environments wearing safety equipment, such as earplugs, safety glasses, welding helmet, flame resistant clothing, and steel-toed shoes.
- Willing and able to work in environments with frequent bending, reaching, and lifting, including lifting up to 50 lbs
- Fork lift certified or willingness to be trained and certified
- Understanding of laboratory operation and basic Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) requirements. Strong understanding and commitment to their own and the safety of others.
- Proficiency with standard workstation software, including Word and Excel
- Willingness to learn specialized computer-based systems and specialized/complex programming language knowledge/skills necessary for operation of specialized equipment such as robotics, monitors, controllers, and analytical equipment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- A current valid driver’s license
- A self-starter who can identify, prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks
- Strong multi-tasking, problem solving and time management skills.
- Detail and result orientated team player
- Willingness to learn new technology areas and continuously improve technical competency
- Demonstrated leadership skills, with ability to inspire others and lead through influence.
- Ability to organize, document and implement consistent test methods.
- Experience with welding research and experiment design
- B.S. in Engineering or Engineering Technology from an accredited college or university. Degree concentrations in Welding, Materials Science, Metallurgy, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering are preferred.
